Adverb

Definition

A word that can appear within the predicate as a modifier, specifying frequency, intensity, or some other quality. Most adverbs will appear initially in the predicate, though some can appear between the auxiliary and predicate head and some can appear after the predicate head. (Suttles, 2003, pp. 49-50) A few words that usually appear as adverbs can also appear as noun modifiers. (Suttles, 2003, p. 88) In addition, adverbs can be given an adjectival meaning and be used attributively, as well as predicatively. (Suttles, 2003, p. 89)
