Debuccalization is when a consonant changes to a [h] or a [ʔ] (Zsiga, 2013, p. 233).
Examples
Hul’q’umi’num’: Glottalized resonant disengagement occurs when a root in form /CAʀˈ/ takes the suffix /-ət/. Exemplified in the following:
- /wílˈ/ ‘appear’ becomes /wíʔlət/ ‘make it appear.’ */wíl‘ət/ would instead be suspected output form (Suttles, 2003, p. 17).
