[+/- strident]

Definition

Applying only to fricatives and affricates, the feature [strident] is used to refer to sounds that are acoustically higher-amplitude and higher-pitched in terms of frication (Zsiga, 2013, p. 266). Sounds that are [+strident] include sounds that sound noisier and “harsher,” whereas [-strident] sounds are quieter.

Sounds that are [+strident] include sibilants (alveolar, post-alveolar fricatives, and affricates), labiodental and uvular fricatives and affricates. [-strident] sounds are all other fricatives and affricates.
