Binding

Definition

According to Binding Theory, different types of nominals are constrained by different conditions on antecedence. In other words, these nominals are bound or free. These conditions are identified by Chomsky and Lasnik (1993) and coined binding conditions. (Lai, 1998, p. 14)

However, according to Lai (1998), binding is not an effective test for structural asymmetries in Secwepemctín (p. 20). Therefore, the effectiveness of binding may be language dependent and requires further research for Salishan languages.
